It’s exactly ten years ago this month since planning the Butterfly Scheme began! How appropriate that the team at Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust produced so many fabulous butterfly cakes for their launch events; we enjoyed them as birthday cakes! Ten years ago, in June, my mother was meant to be in hospital for between 5 and 7 days for a standard procedure, but this extended to 22 days entirely because of well-meaning but inappropriate dementia care. I can honestly say that I’ve met wonderful healthcare staff at every single Butterfly Scheme hospital over the past ten years – people who want to learn, love to deliver appropriate dementia care and whose care makes a world of difference not only to the person with dementia, but also to their carers.
