The National Audit of Dementia, published 16th December 2011, highlights many issues that carers have long been aware of. The excellent news is that it has produced clear and achievable guidelines for those responsible for a better future for hospital dementia care. The Executive Summary of the report can be accessed by clicking here.

The Butterfly Scheme is delighted to note recommendation 6 for the Senior Clinical Lead for Dementia in each hospital:

“The Senior Clinical Lead for Dementia should implement systems of good practice to ensure that staff can identify people with dementia on the ward/during care and treatment and can provide an appropriate response to their needs (e.g. “Butterfly Scheme”)”.

In addition, many of the other recommendations are for actions or systems which are established as standard practice within the Butterfly Scheme. It is heartening to see that there is now recognition of the impact the Butterfly Scheme’s approach provides.
