In early May, Phil Wing, Butterfly Scheme at West Essex (Epping and Saffron Waldon) sent in the results of an evaluation of the Scheme which she had undertaken. It was pleasing to see the following carer feedback:

100% agreed that being part of the Butterfly Scheme led to their relative receiving individual personalised care.
100% would recommend the Butterfly Scheme to other carers / families of patients with Dementia.
Comments included:

  • “Should be in all hospitals  – excellent”
  • “I never worried, thanks to all staff”
  • “Very Good Care”
  • “Every Hospital should participate”
  • “Everybody seems to be kind, wishes to be helpful, would recommend to anyone”

The staff team should be heartily congratulated for offering such superb care – and it’s so pleasing to hear a genuine good news story about dementia care in hospitals.

The staff feedback was as follows:

  • 100% agreed that the Butterfly Scheme helped them to improve the care given to patients with dementia.
  • 100% considered that they were confident in nursing patients with dementia.

Comments included:

  • “Really good training”
  • “I found it interesting and helpful, and gave you a better understanding how to talk to and look after people with dementia”
  • “Love the Butterfly patient information giving a greater understanding of “who” the patient is what they like and dislike”
  • “I feel much more aware of the needs of patients with dementia”
  • “I found the session useful even though I have worked with patients with dementia for many years it still contained valuable information”
  • “I now have a better understanding of dementia”
  • “I have found the training very useful. It is clear and easy to understand. It has helped me consolidate the knowledge I have already had. (Using the carer sheet) creates much more holistic care and incudes families and friends”
  • “All nursing staff everywhere should have this training”

The launch day was attended by a staff team who already had high expectations of their own care delivery, so this generous endorsement of the teaching sessions is received with particular pleasure.
